A Balanced Life

Life is a juggling act on a high wire. When we drop the balls we must come down from the ivory tower to retrieve them and climb again. In coming down to Terra Firma, we get a chance to look up at where we want to be and re-strategise ways in which to get there. We also get to re-think what we do when we are there and also what the next steps are. Ive found that lately I have been juggling not just balls but spinning plates.

When the plates fall, they break.

The audience is watching but ultimately it is not the illusion or perception of others but what I feel within myself and in my heart.

Take for instance writing this blog. I used to rewrite or delete entire posts because I think my readers may not like it, or may think it to be just a mundane entry. Am I writing for perfection, or just writing for the sake of writing? I think the latter…and so I write regardless of the consequences or the perception.

So too on my high wire, I will juggle spinning plates if I choose to do so. Regardless of the degree of difficulty what is more important to me is the degree of happiness…the degree of commitment and the degree of satisfaction. I cannot be afraid to be who I am.

In balancing our lives it is important to to excercise the principle of the sankofa, and exorcise procrastination and uncertainty.

Sankofa:

“se wo were fi na wosan kofa a yenki.”

“it is not taboo to go back and fetch what you forgot”.

Visually and symbolically “Sankofa” is expressed as a mythic bird that flies forward while looking backward with an egg (symbolizing the future) in its mouth.

When we fall from our high wire, it is then that we dissect the issues and learn from the past.

(We can juggle our plates better or decide not to juggle plates at all). Recognise the things that you love and the things that truly make you happy. Dedicate your time and efforts to these things.

Do what you love and love what you do.

Only then will you experience a balanced life.

Made

I was

Jagged

Disheveled

Downside of up

Skewed

Absurd

No footing

On any level

Dusk hemorrhaged

To dawn

Days bled

Fighting each other

I burned

In the fires

My creation

Embers burned

From inside

I come

To the river

To be

Baptised

I am being

  1. Amazing how when we forget ourselves, run away from our essence, or shun our true calling or purpose, the darkness creeps up and takes on a heaviness that we eventually MUST upheave to start anew – and oh what work this is. The timing of such cycles seems always to be marked by common messages coming from nearly all sources available to us – and so it is now with me, and so it seems always to be when I come to your blog.

I just finished reading a couple of entries from my I Ching book – filled with sound wisdoms from the Sage, I watched once again – the King’s Speech, and I recently gobbled through Steven Pressfield’s “The War of Art”. Kevin you have to read this book!!!!

Thank you as always for sharing your truth. I leave with you a gift from Pressfield – a thought I’m sure you will appreciate:
“…fear doesn’t go away. The Warrior and the Artist live by the same code of necessity, which dictates that the battle must be fought anew everyday”.

    1. Love love love your feedback and your words of wisdom. I will add your recommendation to my reading list! It’s been years and the weather is breaking. We must must must do al fresco brunch soon
